Atticus Finch free essay sample

The Lawyer Who Believes In Equality Lawyers are supposed to be compassionate and willing to fight for justice. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is a well respected man in the town he lives in called Maycomb County. He is a lawyer who is trying to defend a black man, who is accused of raping a white woman. This is such an important case because it is a white man against a black man in court where race is not supposed to matter. Atticus tries his hardest to make the jury believe Tom Robinson is not guilty and has done nothing wrong. â€Å"One more thing, gentlemen, before I quit. Thomas Jefferson once said that all men are created equal† (Lee 273), Atticus said before he took his seat. By saying this to the jury, they thought twice about what they were already thinking about Robinson. â€Å"The defendant is not guilty, but somebody in this court room is. The jury can make an educated guess on who actually abused her because of all of the facts they were reminded of. All of this is enough to make anybody with common sense and a heart to say that the defendant is not guilty but also for them to understand the bigger problem in Maycomb County which is racism.
